I was lucky enough to be in Titusville at sunrise this morning, so I caught the sun rising over Kennedy Space Center.

Yuri's Night 2010

The website for Yuri’s Night 2010 recently updated, and now has a list of parties taking place all over the globe.  For anyone who doesn’t know, Yuri’s Night is this massive worldwide celebration of humanity’s achievement in space held on April 12th every year.  April 12, 1961 was the night of Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space.  April 12, 1981 was the first launch of the space shuttle.  With the space shuttle program ending this year, the parties this year should be really special.  We’re going to the Yuri’s Night party at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville.  The tickets are cheap and it should be a fantastic party.

Helen Waittes has created a chart for us for Yuri’s Night, and is working on patterns for socks, mittens and a scarf.  We will have those patterns up very soon.

Scooby Sock Yarn

Scooby Sock Yarn

I also wanted to show off this order of Scooby sock yarn before we mailed it.  I didn’t realize how great Blue Lagoon and Golden Brown Mustard look together until I was putting this order together.  The order also had a variety of Scooby blues.  I am amazed that we now do 14 different solid shades of blue in Scooby.

Haiti sock yarn

Haiti self-striping sock yarn

We spent this weekend dyeing up a new colorway we are calling Haiti.  The colors of the Haitian flag inspired the first skein, which is a self-striping yarn in stripes of blue, white, green, white and red.  We are donating $3 from each skein sold to the American Red Cross.

A Little Bit of Rain and Surfboard Blue

December 3rd, 2009 · Uncategorized

I went over to the beach today with my wife, and just as we reached the beach, it started to rain a little bit.  The ocean was really rolling and the waves were beautiful.

My Favorite Surfboard Blue

My Favorite Surfboard Blue

The ocean was too rough to go in so I went back and finished up a new color that I am really jazzed about.  It is ”My Favorite Surfboard Blue” because it really is the color of my favorite surfboard – a little blue – a little teal – a little bit of faded blue jeans.

Coffee and Knitting

Art of Coffee, Cocoa Beach

Art of Coffee, Cocoa Beach

I met up with some friends at the Art of Coffee on Saturday for some knitting and a little coffee.  We are trying to get a weekend knitting group started in Cocoa Beach now that All Strung Out has closed.  The Art of Coffee has the best chai tea in Cocoa Beach, and I’m hoping that this knitting group catches on.  If you’re in Cocoa Beach around noon on a Saturday, stop by for some great coffee and a little knitting.

It doesn’t look like much, but the red yarn on the table is in the becoming stage.  It is on its way to becoming a hat for my daughter.  Her ears were cold at marching band practice earlier this week, and she wants a bright red hat to keep her ears warm.  The yarn is our worsted weight yarn dyed in a cherry red color that she mixed up.  The pattern is The Classic World War II Watchcap by Helen Waittes, who knit about 2 inches before she left the hat for my wife to finish.

Sunrise and Spring Break

September 28th, 2009 · Uncategorized

I was lucky enough to catch the sunrise this morning.

I’ve been playing around with a new colorway I’m calling Spring Break.  The sunrise today inspired me to play around with pinks and greens in the dyepot to create – what else - Spring Break PinkGreen.

This is just a quick picture of the yarn straight from the dyepot after it dried.

And this is what it looks like reskeined.

There Be Pirate Rainbows

September 21st, 2009 · Uncategorized

For International Talk Like a Pirate Day, I dyed up a bunch of Pirate Rainbow.  I am so digging this yarn that I am keeping a skein to knit.  Now the big question is – what to knit – fingerless gloves or socks?  I’m totally addicted to knitting fingerless gloves.  I’ve knit 5 pairs since the beginning of September.  On the other hand, this yarn makes me feel so happy that a pair of rainbow socks in my sock drawer would be the perfect secret weapon for dreary, overcast winter days.

Knitting on the Dock

September 12th, 2009 · Relaxing, Uncategorized

After a little work today, I went down to the dock to knit today.  I was hoping to see the manatees but no luck.  About 3 weeks ago, a girl jumped off the dock and tried to ride one while her parents took pictures.  Local fishermen started yelling at them because riding manatees in Florida is highly illegal.  They have fine hairs all over their bodies that they use to navigate.  Any contact with a manatee can damage those hairs and harm the manatee.  The girl never rode the manatee but I think she has managed to scare them off.  I check everyday, but so far they have not been back.

The yarn in the picture is my Summer Alligator Green and the pattern is a new fingerless glove pattern from Helen Waittes.  I was hoping to finish them today but the sound of the water was too relaxing, so I didn’t do much knitting.  Maybe tomorrow.

The only work today was setting up some yarn to dye.  I also contacted one of the organizers of the Hands On Retreat about whether they are having vendors.  It would be a long trip for us but I am totally addicted to fingerless gloves, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.  We are only doing a couple of shows in 2010, and I am really hoping that Hands On will be one.  Hands On is beginning to look like Sock Summit, but for fingerless gloves and mittens.

About

September 9th, 2009 · Uncategorized

After spending a lifetime in Ohio dyeing yarn with plants and other natural materials grown on my farm, I moved to the beach to relax and enjoy life….and after about a month, I started dyeing yarn again, this time with acid dyes to produce the amazing tropical colors which surround me.
